What to Expect at an In-Home Stair Design Consultation

Every FJR project — a full custom staircase, a railing upgrade or a custom iron door — starts the same way: a free, no-obligation in-home design consultation. If you’ve never had one, here’s exactly what happens, what we’ll ask, and how to get the most out of the visit.

Why we come to you

Stairs and entryways are dimensional and site-specific. Photos and phone measurements miss the things that drive both design and price — actual rise and run, landing geometry, wall structure behind a half-wall, ceiling height at the top of an open stair. Coming to your home lets us design for reality and give you an accurate written estimate instead of a rough phone guess.

What we measure and assess

During the visit we’ll measure the full staircase or door opening, check the framing and any load-bearing elements, and look at how the space connects to the rest of the home. For a remodel, this is where we confirm whether a half-wall can be opened; for a floating staircase, it’s where we assess whether the wall can carry a concealed steel stringer. We also note lighting, flooring and trim so the finished stair ties into the room.

What to have ready

You don’t need to prepare much, but three things help: a rough budget range so we can steer materials sensibly, any inspiration photos of looks you like, and a sense of your timeline. If you’re selling soon, tell us — the priorities for a pre-sale refresh differ from a forever-home build. Deciding who in the household needs to sign off before you commit is helpful too.

Materials, options and honest pricing

We’ll talk through your options — wood species and stains, and iron, glass, cable or wood railings — and where each lands on cost. Because we publish real price ranges rather than hiding them, you won’t get a mystery number: railings run roughly $60–$250 per linear foot, custom staircases start around $8,000, and iron entry doors start around $3,500, with an exact figure in your written estimate.

What you leave with
